What is a Health Coach?



Last year, I decided to follow my dreams and enrolled in the Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (see more about my journey). At IIN, I learned that by addressing all the facets of health in addition to eating, relationships, exercise, career, and spirituality – we can become happier and healthier in all areas of life.

You may be asking, "Sounds great, Becky, but what is a Health Coach, and why would I need one?" Great questions!


What is a Health Coach?

A Health Coach, also referred to as a Wellness Coach, is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive, sustainable health choices. Health Coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments and by challenging a client to listen to their inner wisdom, identify their values, and transform their goals into action.
“The primary objectives of health coaching are to educate the patient regarding self health management and to encourage patients in taking a more proactive role in staying healthy.”-Medical Economics, Nov 2010
As more and more awareness is given to preventative care, health coaching is seen as a vital aspect of creating healthy lifestyle changes.

Why might you need a Health or Wellness Coach?

Guys, we have a problem!
  • Did you know that 67% of Americans are overweight or obese, and less than 3% of doctor visits are spent discussing nutrition?
  • AND...70% of deaths are caused by chronic illness each year but while $2.3 trillion is spent on healthcare, only 2% of that goes towards prevention.  
YIKES! This is absolutely crazy, and I want to do something about it, don't you?

During my year of training at IIN, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques, and innovative coaching methods with some of the world’s top health and wellness experts. My teachers included:

  • Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine
  • Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine
  • Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center
  • Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University
  • Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating
  • and many other leading researchers and nutrition authorities

As I said at the beginning of this post, I learned that by addressing all the facets of health in addition to eating, relationships, exercise, career, and spirituality – we can become happier and healthier in all areas of life. (Hint: being healthy and living a satisfying life isn't just about eating right and exercising! There's so much more to life!!)   Everyone is on their own individual journey, and what works for me, might not work for you! I use my education and experience to help others figure that out, and then make lifestyle changes that produce real and lasting results for them.

As a Wellness Coach, I work primarily with women who are busy, stressed and are struggling to achieve their goals, health or otherwise, because they are having trouble finding time or the energy. We work together so they can make themselves a priority, achieve their goals, and live a more fun, healthy and fulfilling life.
