Why safer skincare matters

In 2019, we were in Key West and I heard on the news that they banned chemical sunscreen (containing oxybenzone & oxycycolate) because it was killing the coral reef. 😳 Huh??

If it's killing the coral reef and is bad for the environment,

what's it doing to our bodies?!?

This really got my attention about the lack of regulation in the cosmetic industry!

Why is safer skincare important?

We talk a lot about what we put IN our bodies - reading ingredient labels, choosing organic, or low carb, etc, etc, but I never really thought about what I put ON my body. Skin is our largest organ, and a lot of what we put on it is absorbed into our blood stream.

The Facts:

Did you know the European Union has banned or restricted over 1,700 ingredients from cosmetics? The US? only 30!

What does this mean?

With limited regulation, companies can use potentially harmful ingredients (like parabens, phthalates, "fragrance," formaldehyde, etc) in their products. These ingredients can be endocrine or hormone disruptors, potential allergens, or even carcinogens (cancer causing!) This is absolutely NOT about creating fear, just about raising awareness and building knowledge around this issue, and then to take ownership of our health and make safer choices!

After that experience in Key West and learning about the limited regulation and potential risks, I decided to transition my skin care to safer/less toxic products, and through that process I discovered Beautycounter.

Who is Beautycounter?

Beautycounter is the leader in clean beauty (celebrating 11 years this month! 🎉), who's mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. They do this by:

  • Educating on the need for safer products through Brand Advocates like me

  • Formulating products you can trust are safe for you and your family (and that actually work!)

  • Advocating for regulations (like MoCrae) that help take the guesswork out for the consumers

So, the brand's mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone, and this is NOT just Beautycounter products! This is bigger than beauty - this is about a healthier future for all.

More about Beautycounter and their mission:

⭐In addition to being instrumental in passing over a dozen pieces of major state legislation to get safer products into the hands of everyone, Beautycounter helped pass the first major updates to federal cosmetic safety laws since 1938! But our work isn’t done.

Beautycounter is a B-Corp that has committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what is legally required in the United States (the EU bans 1,400 ingredients, Canada 600, the US only 30!). Beautycounter's Clean Promise is to never use 2,800+ questionable ingredients in their formulations (continually researching and adding more) —This is called The Never List™ - and they go above and beyond to test every ingredient against their high standards in pursuit of clean beauty.

BEAUTYCOUNTER IS A CERTIFIED B CORP

Just FYI, March is B Corp month too!

B Corps are businesses that choose to be certified and envision a global economy that uses business as a force for good. The B Corporation is purpose-driven and creates benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. Beautycounter is also:

  • Leaping Bunny Certified

  • EWG Verified

  • Part of the Chemical Footprint Project

  • A member of the Safe Cosmetics Business Network

  • Beautycounter has switched many of its products to glass packaging and removed as many extra pieces and components from products as possible to limit waste and increase the recyclability of the products.

  • They use FSC-certified paper for paper packaging and product literature.

What can YOU do?

One of my jobs as a Brand Advocate is if you decide to shop Beautycounter, I can help make sure you have the right products and get the best deal. Just shoot me an email or fill out this quick skincare survey and I'll get back with you!
